CLINICAL FEATURES : 70 years male,
presented with swelling in the medial portion of dorsum of hand.
TECHNICAL VIEW : High resolution
(H.R.)sonographic
(Longitudinal )sectional study of shaft of 5th metacarpel bone.Linear
probe with 7.5 Mhz.
SONOGRAPHIC
FINDINGS : A clear discontinuty in the shaft
of 5th metacarpal bone with over lapping of fragments.
Metacarpo-phalangeal joint dynamics normal.Soft tissue swelling +.
DIAGNOSIS :
Oblique fracture of the shaft of the 5th metacarpal bone with intact
articular surface.
DISCUSSION
: H.R.sonography clearly delinates fractures,
type (intact/oblique/comminuated)of fractures, nature(old/recent) of
fracture, information about articular surface involment, any
intervening soft tissue between fragments. Sonography is more useful
in evaluating superficial bones like
metacarpals, metatarsals, phalanges, ribs, forearm & leg bone (in
thin persons). H.R.sonograghy is useful to evaluate union of the
fractured fragments.
